The main difference is that a flat-top crane (also known as topless tower crane) does not have an hammerhead structure on the top of the tower, and there is no connecting line between the tops of the hammerhead. Without these parts, shipping, assembly and installation will be easier and faster. Additionally, when multiple cranes are required for a construction project, the boom of one crane requires smaller height clearance to pass under adjacent booms.
Traditional hammerhead tower cranes use A-frame construction to increase lifting capacity.
Simple construction is another difference between flat-head tower cranes and hammer-head tower cranes. Hammerhead cranes, on the other hand, have different stress states, with alternating zones of compression and tension. Hanging wires can control these areas, but metal fatigue is still a risk.
